The Impact of Material and Yarn Selection in Textile Production on Microfiber Emission in the Context of Sustainability

The composition of materials used in dress production and the methods of yarn production play a critical role not only in determining the quality of garments but also in influencing environmental impact. A new study from the University of Leeds shows that fiber composition and yarn production techniques, in particular, have a significant impact on microfiber emissions. This is crucial in efforts to reduce environmental impacts through sustainable material selection and production processes.

Researchers extensively examined the formation of microfibers during the knitting process and the impact of various yarn properties on emissions. Specifically, they found that microfibers originating from natural and bio-degradable fibers, especially ring-spun lyocell fibers, were released more. This finding once again highlights the importance of preferring natural and bio-degradable fibers in sustainable material selection.

The research also revealed that the yarn spinning process is a determining factor in microfiber emissions. Particularly, yarns spun with vortex technology showed less microfiber emission. This suggests that eco-friendly production processes can reduce microfiber emissions and minimize environmental impact.
These findings indicate that the textile industry needs to carefully select materials and production techniques in line with sustainability goals. Preferring sustainable materials and adopting eco-friendly production processes are critical in reducing microfiber emissions and minimizing environmental impact. In this way, the textile industry can play a significant role in creating a less environmentally harmful and more sustainable future.
